  32. Thank you for previewing WindowMagic Shareware, The productivity enhancement 
  33. tool for Windows. You are joining a world wide group of satisfied customers who
  34. use WindowMagic every day to enhance their Windows environment.

  36. The first Windows program you and your colleagues ever used was the Program 
  37. Manager. You are probably very comfortable and knowledgeable about the Program 
  38. Manager, however as you may have noticed there are certain inconsistencies, and
  39. missing features in the Program Managers design.
  40.  
  41. There used to be one solution to this problem, purchase an expensive new type of 
  42. "Program Manager" from a third party vendor.  Unfortunately besides being costly
  43. it requires you to learn an entirely new way of doing things. WindowMagic 
  44. finally provides you with a low cost, easy to use solution to this dilemma.

  46. WindowMagic extends and enhances the capabilities of the Program Manager instead
  47. of trying to replace it.  WindowMagic seemlessly integrates itself with the 
  48. Program Manager, fixes a major inconsistency, enhances a number of features, and
  49. teaches an old dog a few new tricks. Although the Program Manager is greatly
  50. enhanced by the addition of WindowMagic, you are not required to relearn any of
  51. the skills you previously acquired. Everything still works like it used to, you
  52. just have a few more features at your disposal.

  124. Quick Start
  125.  
  126. This Chapter provides a brief introduction to WindowMagic.  Please read this
  127. chapter to get started immediately.

  129. To access WindowMagic:
  130.  
  131. 1. Start Windows.
  132.  
  133. 2. If you have not already done so please follow the instructions in Install.txt 
  134.    Once started a 'WindowMagic' menu option will appear between the 'File' and 
  135.    'Option' items on the program managers menu bar. If you followed the 
  136.    instructions WindowMagic should have been added to your ' Startup' group and 
  137.    therefore will start every time Windows is loaded, no user interaction is 
  138.    required. If WindowMagic does not start, or if you disabled WindowMagic, 
  139.    simply open the 'Startup' group and double click on the WindowMagic Icon.

  143. WindowMagic Menu Overview
  144.  
  145. 1.      Select the 'WindowMagic' menu item from the Program Manager menu bar.
  146.     or simply press [Alt M] and the WindowMagic sub menu will open.
  147.

  149. 2.      Notice that the WindowMagic sub menu has 7 selections all of which 
  150.     can be accessed with your pointing device. Of the 7 selections 6 may be
  151.     accessed with the hot keys designated next to each selection. 
  152.     ( a hot key may be executed by first holding down the 'Alt' key and then 
  153.     the key designated to the right of it.)
  154.  
  155.     Example: Holding down the  'Alt'  key, while simultaneously pressing 
  156.     the 'V' key would automatically launch the Icon Palette Manager.

  173. Using WindowMagic
  174.  
  175. Launching a ToolGroup
  176.  
  177. 1.      Select the "WindowMagic" menu item from the Program Manager menu.
  178. 2.      Select the "Launch ToolGroup" menu item from the WindowMagic sub menu, 
  179.     and a drop down list that includes all of your current program manager
  180.     groups will appear.
  181.  
  182.  
  183. 3.      Select the group that you would like create a ToolGroup for. If the 
  184.     ToolGroup was created previously then it will be displayed in its last 
  185.     position and size. If the ToolGroup is being created for the first time 
  186.     then the ToolGroup options dialog box will appear. 
  187.  
  188. 4.      Notice that there are several options available when creating a 
  189.     ToolGroup. Each option is selectable by the user when creating the 
  190.     ToolGroup and may be modified by the user after the ToolGroup  is 
  191.     created. A mark in the box to the left of the option designates it is 
  192.     selected. If there is not a mark in the box to the left of the option 
  193.     it is not selected. A brief explanation of each option is listed.
  194.  
  195.         OPTIONS                         FUNCTION
  196.  
  197. 1. Display When Windows Starts          If this option is selected the ToolGroup
  198.                     will open when Windows starts. It will
  199.                     remember  it's last displayed location
  200.                     and size.
  201.                                                              
  202. 2. Always on top                        If this option is selected the ToolGroup
  203.                     will always be displayed on top of other
  204.                     windows. This is useful if you have a
  205.                     ToolGroup of favorite functions that you
  206.                     want available at all times.
  207.  
  208. 3. Display Format Options               These options are used to designate
  209.                     how your ToolGroup is displayed.  Each
  210.                     ToolGroup maintains it's own custom
  211.                     display options.
  212.  
  213. (If you should decide to cancel this operation use your mouse to select Cancel)
  214.  
  215.  
  216. A. Horizontal Rows                      This option displays the ToolGroup as a
  217.                     set of horizontal rows that contain push
  218.                     buttons.  By selecting the number of
  219.                     rows you can determine the size and
  220.                     shape of the ToolGroup.
  221.  
  222. B. Vertical Rows                        This option displays the ToolGroup as a
  223.                     set  of  vertical rows that contain push
  224.                     buttons. By selecting the number of 
  225.                     rows you can determine the size and
  226.                     shape of the ToolGroup.  The valid
  227.                     number of rows for a ToolGroup is from
  228.                     1 to 5.
  229.  
  230. C. List                                 This option displays the ToolGroup as a
  231.                     vertical list of push buttons that are                                                          
  232.                     accompanied by the name of the program. 
  233.                     The rows entry field is disabled for 
  234.                     this selection.
  235.  
  236. 4. Once you have set the options for the ToolGroup use your mouse or pointing 
  237.    device to select OK or press return. and the ToolGroup will appear.
  238.  
  239. (If you should decide to cancel this operation use your mouse to select Cancel)

  243. 5. You will now have created a ToolGroup. Notice that the ToolGroup contains 
  244. each program that was in the selected group. To execute a program from the 
  245. ToolGroup, simply position your cursor over the associated Icon and press the 
  246. left mouse key and the program will launch. You may change the position of the 
  247. ToolGroup on your screen by positioning your cursor on the Title bar and 
  248. pressing the left mouse button. While continuing to press the left mouse 
  249. button move your ToolGroup to the desired location and then release the left 
  250. mouse button.

  253. QUICK HINTS:
  254.     If your really anxious to see the options available for the ToolGroups 
  255.     here are a few Quick hints to get you started;
  256.  
  257. A.  Select the System menu box in the upper left-hand corner of the ToolGroup 
  258.     and a list of options will be displayed. 
  259.  
  260. B.  By double clicking on the Title bar of the ToolGroup with the left mouse 
  261.     button you will change the way the ToolGroup is displayed. Example; If your 
  262.     ToolGroup currently displayed Horizontally then double click on the Title 
  263.     bar and it will now display vertically, Double click on the Title Bar again 
  264.     and the ToolGroup will display Vertically with a list, Double click again 
  265.     and your ToolGroup will once again be displayed horizontally.

  267. C.  By positioning your cursor on the Title bar of the ToolGroup and holding 
  268.     down the right mouse button you will activate the QuickAccess feature.

  270. View Icon Palette
  271.  
  272. 1.      Select the [WindowMagic] menu item from the Program Manager menu.
  273. 2.      Select the [View Icon Palette] menu item from the [WindowMagic] menu, or
  274.     press "Alt+V" to go directly to the 'View Icon Palette' dialog.
  275. 3.      After selecting the " View Icon Palette" entry the palette selection 
  276.     dialog will appear.
  277. 4.      Select a WMP palette, exe or dll file from the displayed list of files.
  278.  
  279. Should you decide that you would like to cancel the operation, simply press
  280. the 'Cancel' button.  Help is also available for this dialog by pressing the 
  281. help button.

  284. Customizing a Group or Application Icon
  285.  
  286. 1.  After selecting a palette you wish to view, a window will be created that 
  287. displays all of the icons stored in that file.  This window is referred to as 
  288. an icon palette.
  289.  
  290. 2.  To assign an icon to a program manager Group or Application icon first 
  291. position your cursor over the icon in the palette you wish to select 
  292. (the cursor changes to a hand).
  293.  
  294. 3.  Next click and hold the left mouse button (the cursor changes to a black
  295. and white representation of the selected icon),  drag the mouse cursor 
  296. (while continuing to hold down the left mouse button) into position over the 
  297. top of the Group or Application icon you wish to customize and release the 
  298. mouse button.  The Group or Application icon will immediately be replaced by
  299. the new icon you have chosen.

  303. NOTE:    
  304.    As you move outside of the Palette the cursor changes to a circle with a 
  305.    slash through it, this signifies that it is an illegal 'Drop Zone'.  If 
  306.    you release the mouse button while the cursor is over an illegal zone no
  307.    action will take place.
  308.  
  309. NOTE:   
  310.    You may change the position of the Palette on your screen by positioning 
  311.    your cursor on the Title bar and pressing the left mouse button. While 
  312.    pressing the left mouse button move your Palette to the desired location
  313.    and then release the left mouse button.

  316. Create Icon Palette
  317.  
  318. 1.      Select the 'WindowMagic' menu item from the Program Manager menu.
  319. 2.      Select the 'Create Icon Palette' selection from the WindowMagic menu, or
  320.     press 'Alt+C' to go directly to the 'Create Icon Palette' dialog.
  321. 3.      After selecting the " Create Icon Palette" menu entry,  the palette 
  322.     creation dialog will appear. 
  323. 4.      Next type in a unique name for the palette, the name may contain up to 
  324.     eight characters, but must not contain a file extension. 
  325.         
  326. NOTE: 
  327.   If you type in a Palette that already exist then WindowMagic will prompt you 
  328.   with a "Palette Overwrite Warning" and will then ask if you want proceed?  If 
  329.   you answer no, the system will request that you enter a new name.  If you 
  330.   answer yes, the system will open the new palette and destroy the contents of
  331.   the old palette.

  333. 6.      Now your new Palette will be displayed. You will notice that when your 
  334.     new palette is opened it is empty. By selecting the System menu box in 
  335.     the upper left hand corner of the "Palette" a menu will appear that will
  336.     allow you to: Move, Minimize, Import, Delete, Access Help, or Close 
  337.     the Palette.

  339. NOTE:   
  340.   To Close the Palette Manager, simply click on  box in the upper left hand 
  341.   corner of the palette and select "Close" or press "Alt+F4" 
  342.

  344. WindowMagic Options
  345.  
  346. 1.      Select the 'WindowMagic' menu item from the Program Manager menu.
  347.  
  348. 2.      Select the Options' selection from the WindowMagic menu.
  349.     You will notice that there are three (3) selections available under 
  350.     the options menu. All of these selections allow the user to turn 
  351.     On/Off specific parts of WindowMagic and to bring up the QuickAccess
  352.     customization dialog
  353.  
  354. 3.      To select one of the options position your cursor over the selection 
  355.     while holding down the left hand mouse button and then release the left 
  356.     hand mouse button. 
  357.  
  358. A.      QuickAccess                     'Alt+Q' Brings up the QuickAccess
  359.                         customization dialog
  360.  
  361. B.      Group Icon Customizer           'Alt+G' Group Icon Customizer On/Off
  362.  
  363. C.      Windows Exit Enhancement        'Alt+E' Windows Exit ehancement On/Off

  365.     You may have noticed that the entries have a green check mark next to 
  366.     them. This signifies that the feature is currently enabled, but has the
  367.     ability to be disabled at the your discretion.  If the feature was 
  368.     disabled the check mark would be replaced with a red circle with a 
  369.     diagonal slash mark.  This flexibility lets you pick and choose which 
  370.     enhancements to use.  This is allows you to use a layered approach to 
  371.     enhancing your Windows environment.

  377. QuickAccess
  378.  
  379. The "Quick Access" function brings up the QuickAccess customization dialog. This
  380. is where you can customize the "Quick Access" and 'FastLaunch' functions or 
  381. disable them. This selection must be activated in order for you to use 
  382. "Quick Access"  To access this with the hot key use the "Alt+Q" key sequence.
  383.  
  384. 1.      Select the 'WindowMagic' menu item from the Program Manager menu.
  385. 2.      Select the Options' selection from the WindowMagic menu.
  386. 3.      Select the QuickAccess menu item or use the hot key 'Alt+Q'
  387. 4.      You will then see a dialog box
  388. 5.      There are three (3) different sections to this dialog box.  Use, Sort By, 
  389.     and QuickAccess Activation Keys.

  391. To Select or De-Select any option use your mouse or pointing device to position 
  392. your cursor on top of the selection area and click your left mouse button once. 
  393. Doing this should cause the selection area to become blank ( option disabled) or
  394. filled in ( option enabled)

  398.         QuickAccess     By clicking on the box to the left of the 
  399.                 QuickAccess option a check mark appears 
  400.                 inside the box designating the QuickAccess 
  401.                 function to be enabled To Disable QuickAccess 
  402.                 simply click on the box to the left of the
  403.                 QuickAccess option and when the box is empty 
  404.                 the QuickAccess function is disabled FastLaunch
  405.                 By clicking on the box to the left of the 
  406.                 FastLaunc option a check mark appears inside 
  407.                 the box designating the FastLaunch function to 
  408.                 be enabled. To Disable FastLaunch simply click 
  409.                 on the box to the left of the FastLaunch option 
  410.                 and when the box is empty the FastLaunch 
  411.                 function is disabled

  413.   You must have QuickAccess enabled in order to use FastLaunch.

  423. Section 2       Sort By.                        
  424.         
  425.         Last Used       This directly affects the way QuickAccess sorts 
  426.                 the applications. Selecting Last Used method 
  427.                 will cause the applications that were most 
  428.                 recently used to be displayed at the top of the 
  429.                 list

  432.     Alphabetical Order
  433.                 This Directly effects the way QuickAccess sorts 
  434.                 the applications. The QuickAccess list will be 
  435.                 displayed in alphabetical order.

  441. Section 3       QuickAccess Activation keys
  442.  
  443. This selection allows you to customize the way that you activate QuickAccess. 
  444. If you decide to use the left mouse button, instead of the default right mouse
  445. button you must also select a mode key. A mode key is a key that must be 
  446. pressed and held in combination with the mouse button.
  447.  
  448. Using QuickAccess
  449.  
  450. QuickAccess gives you the power to launch an application from a minimized 
  451. group. This allows you to minimize all of your groups and better organize your
  452. work space. You simply click and hold the right mouse button while the cursor 
  453. is over a minimized group icon to activate the QuickAccess menu.
  454.  
  455. A menu of all applications contained within the group is displayed in 
  456. alphabetical order (sorting by usage is also supported)  Highlighting an 
  457. application and then releasing the mouse key launches the application.  
  458. QuickAccess supports Program Managers file association and minimize on 
  459. use features.  
  460.  
  461. Another feature of the QuickAccess system is FastLaunch.  FastLaunch lets 
  462. you select your favorite or most commonly used application from each group 
  463. that is always available by simply double clicking on the minimized group. 
  464. ( notice the lighting bolt for the first menu entry, this designates your 
  465. FastLaunch choice for the selected group)  This eliminates the need to open 
  466. the group, or to use the QuickAccess menu for your most commonly used 
  467. applications.

  469. After using QuickAccess and FastLaunch most people never go back to the 
  470. "Microsoft Shuffle" way of doing things.

  484. Group Icon Customizer
  485.  
  486. The "Group Icon Customizer" menu selection toggles on and off the ability 
  487. to display a custom icon for a Program Manager group. 
  488.  
  489. This selection must be enabled in order for you to see the customizations 
  490. you have made to the Program Managers group icons.  If you would like to 
  491. disable this function at any time, simply access the WindowMagic menu and 
  492. select the Options menu and then the "Group Icon Customizer" 
  493. menu entry.

  495. This option only affects whether or not the customized groups are displayed, 
  496. so don't worry about losing any changes you may have made. WindowMagic will 
  497. remember what Icons were attached to your Program Manager groups, Simply 
  498. re-enable the Customization option and the Icons that were previously 
  499. selected for your Groups will reappear! To select this function with a 
  500. hot key keys use the "Alt+G" key sequence.

  503. Windows Exit Enhancement
  504.  
  505. The "Windows Exit Enhancement" menu item toggles On and Off the ability 
  506. to use the "Windows Exit Enhancement" feature.  If you would like to 
  507. disable this function and use the standard Windows exit dialog, simply 
  508. access the WindowMagic menu and select the Options menu then select the 
  509. "Windows Exit Enhancement" menu entry.

  511. To re-enable the "Windows Exit Enhancement" feature simply access the 
  512. WindowMagic menu and select the Options Menu then select the 
  513. "Windows Exit Enhancement" menu entry and the ability to utilize the 
  514. function will be re-enabled.  To toggle this feature with the hot key 
  515. use the "Alt+E" key sequence.

  522. Using Enhanced Exit
  523.  
  524. Being a Windows user you know that occasionally you want to exit and 
  525. then immediately restart Windows, or possibly re-boot your machine. 
  526. You might want to do this when you receive a program error, or maybe 
  527. you just want to start fresh. WindowMagic makes this simple and easy 
  528. by providing an enhanced exit dialog that replaces the 
  529. Program Managers.  
  530.  
  531. Additionally all exit features are accessible without bringing up the 
  532. dialog by using the ALT-X, ALT-R, or ALT-B hot key sequences 
  533. respectively.  This allows for a very fast means of exiting Windows 
  534. without using the Program Managers exit dialog.

  536. Help
  537.  
  538. The "Help" menu entry displays the help topic available for the 
  539. WindowMagic program If you would like to use help for WindowMagic, 
  540. simply access the WindowMagic menu and select the "WindowMagic Help" 
  541. Menu item and the help dialog will appear.

  543. About WindowMagic
  544.  
  545. The "About WindowMagic" menu entry displays the:  Registered user, 
  546. Version Number, Serial Number. and WinWear's telephone number so you 
  547. can tell all your friends what a great product WindowMagic is, or 
  548. report a problem.  If you would like to view the "About WindowMagic" 
  549. screen, simply access the WindowMagic menu and select the 
  550. "About WindowMagic" menu item and the "About WindowMagic " 
  551. dialog will appear.

  553. Disable WindowMagic
  554.  
  555. The "Disable WindowMagic" menu entry disables WindowMagic until 
  556. you restart Windows or restart WindowMagic.  If you would like to 
  557. disable WindowMagic, then simply access the WindowMagic menu 
  558. and select the "Disable WindowMagic" menu entry, or use the "Alt+D" hot 
  559. key sequence.
